The Red Paintings

The Red Paintings: an epic mixture of music and art, reality and fantasy, opened up their colourful world for the season finale of the cooking show on Easter Sunday, 2007.A world of imagination, aliens, religious iconography and political undertones. Rock music with electric violin and cello, and painters, painting to the music, pouring ideas onto their fabric canvases and human canvases. It’s almost too much to take in. And that’s before you set your eyes on musicians – a band dressed in kimonos and oriental-inspired make-up, led by a man who is somewhat like Willy Wonka, and appears to have stepped out of the pages of a Dr Seuss book. Ten fans, who had each won a “golden ticket” to the show, came along as guests of the band, adding to the ambience by cramming into the rehearsal room and singing along. Some even dared to lend a hand in the kitchen. While most of the band stuck to the kitchen to cook for the guests, Trash played host, hanging out, chatting and passing around food. And in between times, he lit the stove. Ellen commenced construction on her generous ice-cream sundae, layered with wafers and cordial, and dressed with fruit, caramel lollies and chocolates. David rounded up some guests to help with the first part of his entree - “Pig in Poo”. Andy nearly lost an arm chopping garlic and Amanda spotted a cat on the kitchen table… Amanda and Andy started cooking: Amanda making a vegetarian dish (that she refused to eat), and Andy tackling garlic prawns, cooked for the first time ever, and featuring cream and coconut milk. The two chatted about eggplant, kimonos, prawns, drains and fishing as the prawns curdled away. Trash, David and Ellen gave a premiere acoustic performance of “We Belong in the Sea” from the piano in an upstairs bedroom, where everyone crammed in to listen.David gave the prawns the thumbs up, wrapping some in pastry as the second part of his mammoth entrée. Trash came into the kitchen to take a break from the craziness, with stories of fans sniffing his sheets, and a rock from outer space, before heading back out to share around the pig in poo, prawns and stir-fry. But it wasn’t until the ice-cream sundae came out to a round of applause that the guests’ enthusiasm for the food came to the fore. The party moved outside, and the sundae was demolished in a snap. Meanwhile, work on David’s mammoth entrée continued on, as he expanded upon his pastry-wrapped treats with a selection of random ingredients. The prune prawn. Rockmelon and basil. Bacon and basil. Strawberries. Easter eggs. Caramel lollies. Possibly soy sauce. And even the threat of a fingernail…Some sweet, some savoury. “You could feed them to anyone and they’d love it”. A theory later tested when the pastries were shared around. But what of the end? The revolution is never coming.Goodnight Australia!

The Kindness of Strangers

The Kindness of Strangers were as diverse in the kitchen as they are with their music. The Kindness’ dark folk-pop songs are fantastical stories, and with instrumentation including ukelele, mandolin and flute, they paint a picture with a twist of good humour … and bubbles. Yes, bubbles. Brigitte and Alice threw down the gauntlet with a bold statement about their superior cooking abilities, and from there, it was girls against boys in Ali’s kitchen. Waiting their turn, Glen and David hung outside as Ali struggled with hard butter in the making of her densely packed poppy-seed cake. Concern over Ali’s deviation from the recipe was sparked when Brigitte spotted bi-carb soda in the mix. Is bi-carb good for cakes as well as smelly shoes? When dinner guest, Hoges arrived, the idea of scoring was introduced, and the division between camps turned into an actual competition, prompting Brigitte to create scorecards. Densely packed with all the goodness of opium, the cake went in the oven, and the boys entered the kitchen. David on drinks; Glen on mushrooms. i.e. Mushrooms à la Glen. As Glen read his recipe and prepared the random ingredients for the mushies, David got the sugar and water boiling for his Stab-berry Daiquiri. Glen painted pesto on his mushrooms, before filling in the holes and getting them in the oven. Meanwhile, Dave added frozen strawberries (stab-berries) to his hot sugar syrup in a bid to create an icy effect to his blend. “High quality” gin & vodka were added and the daiquiris were shared ‘round. Entering a now messy kitchen, Brigitte cut up her halloumi – finding a mystery something in the middle - and explained the goodness of fried blocks of cheese in a diet-friendly salad. The band remained unconvinced about the success of in the daiquiris; in particular, the illusive “icy effect”. Dave sought counsel in Hoges, and round two of the Stab-berry followed. The food came out and the competition came to a head as Hoges mediated the scoring. Roly looked on, and in the end, it was each muso for themselves, as Dave’s wild scoring left the others in a spin. But did it change the end result?

Andrew Morris

These days, solo artist Andrew “Moz” Morris usually performs with his long-time friends, The Dry Bones, but with no band mates in sight, he proved the strength of his songs and performance ability with a bare bones rendition of five of his alt-country tunes.Moz bravely turned his hand to the piano for two songs, and played guitar for three. His small audience – good mates Shae and Ian , and girlfriend, Kelly - watched on prior to entering the kitchen.Moz’s ties to his past life as waiter at an Indian restaurant came to the fore: he chose a number of Indian dishes, starting with and entrée of Onion Bhajis. “Hhhhello Ladies….” It was the first time he’d cooked the bhaji’s… a few nerves. But it’s pretty clear that Moz knows his way around the kitchen. Anyone with a well-stocked spice box like his must be serious about their food!Andrew enlisted Ian to chop the onions and Kelly to help with the accompanying chutney: fresh herbs and a few little guys. Apart from a little wayward beer upon serving, the dish worked perfectly. The main of Goa Fish Curry featured Queen Fish – the chicken of the sea; along with dry roasted herbs, ground with big bibos. Brisbane’s secret Tamarind reserves are no longer a hidden treasure: Andrew reveals the joys of Tamarind. And the joy of pickling… and a book featuring some Indian guy who looks great.Shae was charged with the salad, and she and Andrew reminisced about primary school years, featuring a certain nun – possibly 6ft under. Finally, Mango Lassis dedicated to Peter Allen were served for dessert, although they were a little hard to fit in after so much good food! Will a career in Test Cricket be next?

Dubdoubt

It was sunshine and scenery all round for Dubdoubt. Sunshine and scenery the music. Sunshine and scenery the cocktail. Sunshine and scenery… the scenery! From the back deck of Nic’s colourful inner-city cottage, the band played five catchy tunes before splitting into pairs and hitting the kitchen. The12-8 horns (that’s their combined height) warmed up the day with cocktails and salad. Sticking with the theme, there were peaches, limes and green; Euan explaining that green is the key to any salad. Daz worked his way through the cocktails, and despite running into trouble with fragile glasses and a bit of difficulty lighting the lime rind, the cocktails went down a treat. Several rounds followed. Perfect for a summer’s day…… And to prove just how summery it was, Nic, a keen handyman, fastened a “calendar” to a post. ??!?The Ruggles brothers – yes, they’re brothers – got in early to prepare a celiac-friendly dense chocolate mudcake for dessert. Complete with caramelized pears for people to “munch down hardcore.” Meetch’s signature dish; caring for the celiacs. As the rest of the band volunteered their bowl-licking services, John happily jumped through hoops for Meetch, peaking egg-whites and mixing batter, before it was all poured into the cake tin. Not just any ol’ tin, but a tin given to Meetch by Ghandi. The floor collected a lot of Hayden’s ingredients, and he pretty much ate the rest before stuffing some capsicums with the remaining bits and pieces. Nic fought off a fly in the kitchen as he prepared the fastest and easiest pizzas ever. Wait for the oven. Do a little dance. All that food and sunshiny goodness makes one a little tired. With belly’s full of chocolate cake, we say goodbye to Dubdoubt.

Glasshouse

Glasshouse prove that you don’t have to be depressed people to play music that, in their own words, “comes out depressive”. Yes, you can sing about hard-hitting issues and still be happy people. And of course, a few drops of wine from the Glasshouse vineyard definitely helps the happy-factor. So on a fine day in Dan’s open-plan kitchen and living area, the band sat down for an acoustic set with a bottle of pinot gris, before embarking on a three course vegetarian meal. A vegetarian meal in the interest of humanitarianism. Or, as Raven postulates, because vegetarians are better people :-)Sticking with pre-determined roles from the outset, Dan (head chef) and Matt (the apprentice) did most of the cooking. Stew and Raven (a.k.a Statler and Waldorf) commented from the sidelines and assisted with other bits and pieces to keep the process smooth; things like fixing Matt’s hair, cleaning the benches, and tending to the wine cellar. The latter proving to be a busy job.The eggplant-based entrée didn’t prove to be as popular as Dan had hoped, with Raven and Matt not convinced that the dish was too much more than hot balsamic vinegar. Things became a little messy as the wine started to sink in, but the band forged ahead and completed a tasty main course, timed to perfection by the tomato timer, and balanced to perfection with the inclusion of only one genetically modified zucchini.Dan and Matt took over camera operation as the band sat down to the main. The Creamy Vegetarian Pasta of Doom was washed down with wine. And more wine. And wine with Raven’s fingers in it. So the dish was received well, although Raven was keen for some vegemite toast. The band headed back to the kitchen to prepare the dessert. Once the missing thyme had been located, Raven got stuck into the dirty dishes, and the rest of the band prepared the delectable Butter Peaches. As the peaches cooked, Dan acknowledged Stew’s ongoing contribution as the sensible band member, prompting the group to compare shoes. The tomato timer spoke, and the peaches were served. With wine.We didn’t see Raven under the Christmas tree as speculated.TV Loves You.

Intercooler

Direct from The Shed we present… Intercooler. When a band lives in an enormous shed with a newly built home studio and adjoining kitchen, it’s a perfect fit The Rock n Roll Cooking Show.Phil, Darek, Joel and Damon set up their studio space in an intimate circle with just enough room to spread the drums and throw their guitars around. The slick and energetic performance with amps wound to 11 is enough to make one’s hair fly and head nod. As proven by Darek and Joel. The band reckon they don’t have fat enough hands to become full-time TV chefs, but their food was good and tasty anyway. Thai style food… and banana custard… with some quiet Bloody Mary’s in the background. When Darek-the-disorganized-genius took control of the entrée, it was clear that the energy of the songs would match the energy in the kitchen. His unorthodox method of blending fishcakes raised eyebrows amongst the band, but proved to be quite effective. None of the fish in the tank got hurt. Damon contributed to the cooking by reading instructions, while Phil cleaned dishes – something he almost likes doing. He’s a rare gem, that Phil. Upon serving, Joel contributed to the overall ambience of the occasion, serving up the fishcakes on the band’s best crockery. Flaunting their high-income Brisbane rock-star lifestyle even further, Damon and Phil showed off the spoils with a look inside the fridge.Joel showed off his Gary Busey badge and his Busification as he prepared the main of Bump Yum Gai, a hot and spicy Thai-style soup with red lava. There was just enough gas in the bottle to get Phil through his old favourite - banana custard. Good thing the custard packet comes with instructions.Joel thinks they might never have another dinner guest again. Don’t know about that, but Darek has 200 potatoes. Purportedly.

The Gin Club

Get flat! Singing about sitting on verandahs and drinking red wine has never been more apt, for there was plenty of “best-vintage” red wine and a suitable verandah to sit on with The Gin Club. With the heat turned up and the cricket on TV, it was a good day to sit back and watch the Ashes. Better still, to sit out the back and listen to the stories of The Gin Club, proud Queenslanders and cricket-lovers, soulfully singing away with their real-life Australian tales. A bit hot, though. Should have brought along a wading pool like the duck next door. Keen cooks, The Gin Club. In between cricket updates, they prepared an Italian feast, accompanied by plenty of wine and good humour. Brad and his able assistant, Conor, threw down on the bruschetta for starters. Not a game for lightweights; they demonstrated a very fine chopping technique, and a fine balance of ingredients to arrive at the correct tomato to onion ratio.Amongst various types of fat, oil and paper towels, camemeat upon meat upon meat. Ben’s famous veal parmigiana – a vegetarian’s nightmare, and a dish that purportedly tastes like food turned into diamonds and gold. Drawing on the fruits of Bridget’s herb garden, Scott added a little je ne sais quoi to the meal, preparing his own chilli and garlic (“chill-arlic”) pasta. Bridget, attempting to look after the band in a self-professed motherly way, prepared a salad in an effort to get the blokes to eat some greens. She also prepared some gorgeous stuffed mushrooms, that ended up being very stuffed, indeed...Not a lot of basil was left on the basil bush and the Ginners were basil-ed up to oblivion by the end. And yes, the meal was so good, that everybody got “flat”.

Repeat Offender

Repeat Offender gave each other a real thrashing - a lot of knocks and punches, a healthy level of verbal abuse, food from the dead shop and then a swim in a fluorescent pool. The five band members played from Joel’s lounge room, where they delivered six of their high-energy rock tunes. And then came the high-energy meal for a stomach of steel.Matt led the cooking by preparing a communal drink. As Ryan explained, it’s something that brings the band together as they cook. Amongst the cacophony, Steven took charge of the entrée - guacamole. The avocadoes, although questionable, were still used. A bit of onion and plenty of salt provided a quick fix. And two whole lemons proved to be very helpful. Dane demonstrated the right way to chop an onion, while Joel tried to keep the house from being wrecked. The band made their way outside for the BBQ, and the smoke was a little overwhelming. Steven opted for a pair of ladies glasses to protect his eyes as he cooked. There was meat, meat, meat. Sausages, T-bones, Ribs... and "Meat Pads." Matt carefully seasoned the food with an inordinate amount of pepper. It took a bit of time before the dog would eat it, though. Meat. Salad, anyone?Who doesn’t love cream buns for dessert? Repeat Offender have the cream bun recipe to beat all cream bun recipes. Steven just loved them. After a refreshing swim to end the day, we say goodbye to Repeat Offender. Goodbye and good health. It’s a good thing Steven knows how to self-diagnose and Matt knows the difference between Panadol and Ansuol.

26

The “rainy-day sessions with 26”, direct from Drew’s kitchen, were a held in the middle of a drought… no rain, lots of sun, and a light, refreshing Asian-influenced meal. It’s hardly rainy-day stuff. Then again, 26 weren’t their usual selves that day.Normally a big loud rock band, 26 left their amplifiers and samplers at home to play a relaxed acoustic set on the back deck, featuring five tunes, and including a county-styled version of “Rescue Me.”The surf and turf affair was run by the “taller boys,” Nick and Ross, who chose the menu for the day, drawing on the band’s love of Asian foods and coffee. Nick also drew upon the country’s rich aluminium reserves to create a foil parcel for his Thai-style fish bake, as Iain cleaned up the “sackable offence” left behind from the Thai Beef Salad. Drew, having arrived at the conclusion that he is better suited to eating other people’s food than cooking food for them, used his skills to assist with other important tasks around the kitchen; including presentation of food, cleaning plates, operating the oven, and setting the table.Ross specialized in the presentation of herbs, whipping of teatowels, and the preparation of sauce; involving the chopping of chillis, whose wrath he later felt. After a game of “name this song,” Iain packed up to head off for another gig, and the rest of the band waited for the fish bake to cook. They served it up with their tong tong tong tong tongs before moving onto a delicious affogato dessert.Light, refreshing. Perfect for a summer’s day.

Bertha Control

Putting the fun back in funk, and the gay back in reggae, Bertha Control are healing the world through music… and cooking! With nothing in the closet except some home-grown mushrooms, the multi-instrumentalists played a vibrant set on the verandah of saxophonist, MaTHRILLda’s, house. Representing the sisterhood, this sometimes politically motivated all-girl five-piece played through five of their reggae-ska-rebel tunes, with harmonies in full bloom. The band presented a colourful vegetarian feast, using ingredients fresh-picked from the garden and other veges from the local organic food co-op. Veg with personality all the way!Bertha Control kicked off the cooking with a harvest, before cramming five Berthas, one dog and several friends into the kitchen at once. CC, representing the greens, chose the lettuce for her salad leaf by leaf, and carefully checked it for cabbage patch kids. Jules, veg-aquarian, had the mushrooms under control as she sang about a cook named “Gina,” and tended to the compost.Patty Bom, tres gourmet, focused on a fantastic red sauce, and demonstrated how drumming skills are useful when tending to multiple dishes in the kitchen. Flawless, caretaker of beverages, struggled to blend pine-nuts with a stick blender before building her muscles the witchy way with a mortar and pestle, and finally coming into the 21st century with a food processor.MaTHILLda showed us through her garden, prepared two delicious dips, and gave us an Australian “Herstory” lesson, acknowledging Indigenous Australians.… and Prue and True popped in for a quick how d’you do… and helped with the menuuu…. Eat up and our belly’s full! Thanks for the food and music, and thanks for the five Berthas, totally in control. Gaymen.…and gay woman.

PTYLTD

Dust ya dancing shoes! PTYLTD and friends expanded a normal Thursday BBQ at their shared studio into a veritable food and music frenzy. The trio, Peter G (keys) and twins Tim (bass/vox) and Danny (drums), invited guest musicians Julian (percussion) and Grant (guitar) along for the ride, and together, they more than filled out the enormous warehouse space they played from. Their signature funky house music, complete with samples, synths, and their unmistakable falsetto vocals will have you dancing on the rooftops.Seafood was the order of the day, and with a little help from Raptis Seafood, Tim arranged a feast with snapper, octopus, scallops and crab. Julien was at home in the kitchen, and he guided the band through some fantastic dishes, including an extremely aromatic Crab Red Thai Curry. After some lessons in how to use a juicer, Peter G prepared Vodka cocktails in a show of respect to his Russian roots; but not a lot of juice made it into the cups. Danny modified the juicer with some "tech" - demonstrating that a bit of gaff can fix anything. Tim, espousing the wonders of aluminium foil, wrapped the snapper for the BBQ, and Julian quietly continued his curry, whilst lending a hand with the other dishes.Knowing his place, Danny opened cans, cleared up dishes, and did all the odd stuff a drummer at the bottom of the food chain must do, as Grant and Peter G amused themselves with drums and rhymes. A few friends dropped in and out, joining the feast. Was it good? Oh yes – as Danny commented, the whole snapper was like Christmas. Peter G thought is was like a quarter chicken and chips. Tim summed it up, “This is what life’s all about.”

The Kidney Thieves

Five young men and a selection of fine cheeses. Direct from The Jungle Library (TKT rehearsal studio), the Thieves danced themselves sweaty ‘til there was no oxygen left in the room. The Kidney Thieves showed us that they don’t just have a soft spot for instrumental breaks; they also get weak at the knees at the very mention of cheese: grated cheese, cubed cheese, soft cheese and crumbly cheese too! So how could you go wrong with a cheese salad? If you’re a thief and you're not playing or cooking, it’s likely that you’ll be sitting on the verandah in a wheelchair. Or, if you’re the Dancing Mule, you might be burning yourself with a cigarette lighter or lying on the kitchen floor. Everybody helps in their own little way.Jack Muzak, voted head cook, was also the head sampler of ingredients. He talked us passionately through all things gourMET, and when a suitable bowl for melting chocolate was found, his earnest work on the Stoney Street Slice commenced, as did the clean-up of chocolate by mouth.Chrispy demonstrated his dedication to cheese by cutting blocks and blocks into 1cm cubes, while Crafty J got to work removing the rust from the baking tray for the Stoney Street Slice. Simon quietly chopped up pizza toppings, and Jazz the dancing ballerina dog showed us a few tricks. The band’s guests were intrigued by the cheese salad, loved the pizzas and were stuffed by the time dessert arrived. So much food had been sampled in the making, that the cooks weren’t hungry by the time the food was ready. … and the outcome? Apparently the word is “GLARGEN,” although there was some talk of the cheese salad getting stuck in your throat.

Preference

Heavy hitting quintent, Preference, rock out on the show with squealing guitars, blood curdling vocals and enough energy to light the city. If you like your music loud and agitated, then you’re in for a treat. If you like your metal bass players to wear pig-tails, you’re in for a treat. If you like a good BBQ, you’re in for a treat, too. Did you know that ricepaper looks like a condom, but doesn’t taste like one? Did you know that spooning leads to forking? If you didn’t, you heard it here first. Preference were keen in the kitchen, splitting up the entrée, mains and cocktail preparation between them. Nathan got stung by lime juice and chilies while preparing his Salad-Dodger Salad (marinated lamb cutlets). He later tempted fate with a can of spray-on oil and an angry smoking BBQ.Being an ex-chef, nicKo was pleased to not be chopping parsley, but he chopped enough other stuff for the “Reflector Rolls” (Vietnamese-style rolls) to make up for it. Carlos’ concentration over his cocktails almost matched the intensity of his face as he flexed his bicep and muddled lychees into a pulp. Apparently, it’s all about the bicep. The rest of the band endorsed the outcome. Tim: "It's like food, man." It’s unknown whether Tim has ever cooked prior to the show, yet he figured out how to de-seed a chili and squeeze a lime. Not so hot on the garlic crushing, though. Fortunately, Chris, master of the house, had finished his "big salad in a big salad bowl" in time to provide remedial classes. Food so light, music so heavy. From the second storey of the house, guest guitarist, Gerry, added some delicate flamenco guitar to the wall of thunder coming from the band downstairs. Carlos demonstrated the plight of a metal vocalist; singing while doubled over, with veins popping out of his neck. nicKo spun around and around and around and managed to keep his balance. Nathan and Tim banged heads till they nearly fell off, their synchronous guitars bouncing off each other; and Chris kept precision time, a neat kitchen, and a dog called Billy.

endoPHONIC

Music can be tricky stuff when you play a cactus and there are nasty pointy jabby bits to negotiate: Greg's face says it all as he plucks the prickly beast to Ric's surreal guitar sounds. endoPHONIC performed four unique pieces that were a beautiful melding of beats, hooks and textures, using electronic and organic instruments played as you've never seen them before. No band-aids required. Meanwhile... Is the neighbour trimming his hedges... ....with a chainsaw? Is that Mr Whippy I hear in the background? Why am I surrounded my a halo of mossies? "What kind of dump is this? " "This is Brisbane, Ladies and Gentleman." A Paddington cottage to be precise. The saucepans may have been small, but endoPHONIC cooked a stellar meal. Nobody was left thirsty either, thanks to Ric's "magic fridge": a fridge that could spontaneously produce the very wine he was thinking of. But the magic fridge's powers didn't extend to saving the unidentifiable green sludge in a packet that was found in the bottom of its vege drawer."The world is very big, and proscuitto comes from a pig." Potential rock hit. Truthful. Pensive. endoPHONIC.

Gerald

Gerald, a six-piece, Brisbane-based ska band had been together for quite a few years before we met up and filmed this pilot episode back in 2002. With the group wearing their obligatory Gerald uniforms, Luke hosted the show at his parents’ house - complete with a fine selection of family photos adorning the walls. We were treated to five upbeat tunes, and some less than up-beat recipes!Things in the kitchen didn’t go quite to plan. Dave’s dessert – although stunning in its presentation - was a disappointment to some members of the band.Ben: “Is this it? You said it was, like, pretty and stuff.”Adam: “Can we see that again in slow-mo cause I think people at home wouldn’t have caught how you made that.”As for the mains... Ben and Adam’s first offering ended up in the compost bin: but what went so wrong that they were forced to take such drastic measures? Ben made a mad dash to the corner store for a new set of ingredients in an effort to redeem the dish. Meanwhile, Sarah and Jeremy were enjoying cocktails on the wide verandah.
