Winners! 3 Antenna Awards

In a remarkable effort, Brisbane’s The Rock n Roll Cooking Show picked up three awards at this year’s Community Television True Local Antenna Awards at Federation Square in Melbourne on Friday night. The national awards night, hosted by Channel 31 Melbourne, was a rousing success and a great celebration of Australian community television. The event (broadcast live in Melbourne) featured talent from right around the country, live music performances and a host of local TV stars and celebrity presenters, including Peter Garrett, Hamish & Andy and Melbourne Lord Mayor John So.There were 111 awards nominees across 23 categories, covering everything from Sports to Drama, Harmony and Diversity to News and Current Affairs. The RnR Cooking team is obviously chuffed with the results in our neck of the woods, picking up three awards from five nominations: • Best Arts Show • Best Music Show and • Best SoundNot too bad for our first season of tele! The awards were judged by a panel of industry experts from organisations including: AFTRS, Channel Nine, SBS Melbourne, Open Channel, ACMI, National Film and Sound Archive, Film Victoria, Volunteering Australia, Our Community, Multicultural Arts Victoria, Multimedia Victoria, the Victorian Multicultural Foundation and independent production companies. The competition was pretty stiff, and we missed out in our other nominated categories of Best Editing (winners: The Ugly Stick) and Outstanding Production Achievement (winners: Geraldton on Show). Obviously two other very top shows :-) ! Congrats folks. There’s a full list of winners under “Antennas” on the C31 site.Channel 31 in Brisbane are planning on broadcasting the event some time soon - we'll keep you posted. So here’s thanks…… because no “man” is an island. The Rock n Roll Cooking Show would like to say thank you to everyone who helped us get the show on the road – we know who you are :-) And special mention to Orange Octopus Productions, all the crew & supporters, Mark Rolski, Channel 31 Brisbane & the community TV broadcasters around Australia, all the musicians who’ve been a part of the show, our sponsors: • Louise Elliott Design • KND Web Consultants • Brisbane Backline • IVT Productionsour good friends at Brisbane Sound, C31 Melbourne and the Antenna Awards team, and importantly, thanks to everyone who watches the show!

Shooting: Andrew Morris

With no band to speak of, Andrew “Moz” Morris got by with a little help from his friends. So where the hell were The Dry Bones? Dry bones or no bones, it sure didn’t stop things. Moz decided to have a crack at the piano himself, doing his best Liberace for two of his five songs. It’s the first time he’s performed at the piano, so we’re pleased we were there for it.Shooting a piano that faces into a corner is a bit tricky, and squeezing in beside the piano was a bit rough, but we’re not about polish here at The Rock n Roll Cooking Show. It all seemed to work. We had a bit more space when Andrew played guitar, and the small audience gathered on the couch appreciated the concert.Andrew and his partner Kelly invited their friends Ian and Shae around for lunch. They were surprised to find a film crew there shooting a TV show, but they quickly adapted to the idea, and were happy to lend hand in the kitchen. We think this will be a very different episode, with Andrew taking all the heat as a solo artist, and being helped out in the kitchen by loved ones instead of band-mates. It was a big call, but Moz took the heat well. Everybody helped in the kitchen, and it was a very laid-back afternoon, no shoes required. Not even a tear over cutting up a whole bag of onions for the Onion Bahjis. The left-over bahjis will go down well the morning after his next gig at The Bowrey. Apparently the bar staff there look after him reeeeallly well.Is it true that tasting food off your palm is the best way to test it? Is there really no salt there? We’re going to have to look that one up. Could be true. We think Moz might know what he’s talking about. Clearly, he spends a lot of time cooking and quite enjoys it. And something must have rubbed off with all the time he spent washing dishes in an Indian kitchen many moons ago, because lunch was fantastic. The vote was unanimous. But the vote aint unanimous on Huey. What’s all this talk about Ian Hewitson, aka Huey, the Kiwi/Aussie TV chef? We’ll have to check the footage, but about half the bands that have come on the show have talked about him, and it hasn’t been prompted by us! Huey’s obviously made his mark on many musicians, although the vote it divided as to whether he’s good or not. Amongst other things, Moz had a crack at Huey’s pronunciation of eggs: “iggs”. It’s the little things that people seem to notice. We left the happy quartet as they were adding vodka to their lassies, and drove off in Polly-the-van licking our palms to test for salt. Now that he’s done a cooking show, Moz can work on his test cricketing aspirations.

Shooting: Intercooler

Direct from Intercooler HQ in deepest, darkest Brisbane-town comes our first shoot in the luxury of a studio. A place known as “The Shed” houses three of the four band members, and has all the mod cons, including a newly built recording studio. Well, maybe not all the modern cons: they did cook on a camp stove and eat out of plastic takeaway containers.Things were pretty relaxed for us when we arrived. The band had set up their gear, and Darek, half guitarist/half sound engineer, had put together heaps of the audio setup for us, making life really easy for our audio team.Phil and Joel went off to get the groceries as we put our other bits and pieces in place. They were back in no time, Damon arrived, and it was time for beers, music and bloody mary’s. And silly hats. No-one ever really explained the hats to us…. But they all wore HATS.We were pleased that Phil wore white clothes – if he were in black he would have disappeared into the black wall tiles in the darkened studio. It was LOUD in the studio where the band played. Joel and Damon wore headphones so they could hear each other’s vocals over the drums and guitars. One member of our camera crew commented she could feel the air pushing out of the kick drum onto her back. Good thing the camera crew wore earplugs. Not so for the band; but that’s rock’n’roll. The camp stove came out for the cooking because the shed, despite its brilliance, doesn’t have a full kitchen. If it did, it wouldn’t be a shed, right? There was a leak in the gas bottle, so we smelt a fair bit of gas during the cooking. And the gas only just lasted long enough to cook the custard for Phil’s dessert. By a whisker.Scrolling away in the background to all of this were Darek’s computer screen-savers, making us all laugh. There are some really ugly people out there…. And lesbian cows, evidently. Some friends and family dropped by during the day and sat in the studio, peering out the window at the band cooking away. None of them came out to help with the cooking, but a few were game enough to eat the food. The food was good! Joel’s Thai soup was hot and delicious, and SOMEHOW, Darek’s fish cakes were actually really great. The cameras came away with a bit of fishcake on the lenses, tho’. It was much safer filming the bananas and custard. Yum.We met up with Intercooler just in time: this was their first project in their new studio. The shed was hand-built by the band, with Phil rescuing many of the building materials from bins on work-sites. It’s a fine place to hang out, and will be the envy of many, many bands. Thanks Intercooler!

Shooting: Dubdoubt

It was sunshine and scenery all ‘round with Dubdoubt, although we drew our first noise complaint in nine shows. The horns, drums and guitars were a little unwelcome over one fence last Sunday morning, but they drew applause from over others. And they drew applause from us, too. Besides, it was almost midday on a beautiful day.The sun was shining, the crows were hanging around (threatening to piss us off with their crowing), and the other less annoying birds were singing. None of those turned up in the recording, but we did hear a really loud car doing a burn-out in the middle of one song. That’s what you get recording bands in the middle of the city on the back verandah. So listen out for it ☺Back to the start… With the crew stuggling after the previous day’s shoot, we were pleased to receive a warm welcome from Nic when we arrived at his place at an unfriendly hour for a Sunday morning. It’s the first time we’d shot two shows back to back, and a long day with a lot of lugging gear up and down stairs had left us a little worse for wear. When the band arrived, they got busy hanging banners on the verandah - colourful artworks that were a perfect addition to the sunshine and scenery theme. Meanwhile, Nic’s Mum was visiting from NZ, and we’d turfed her out of her room to set up our audio position. Sorry Charlotte!Nic set up his kit, Hayden pulled out the tambourine, Darren and Euan started warming their lips, the brothers rolled in their amps and we were away. Through their set, and to the cooking. The band took it in turns to cook, and those who weren’t cooking chilled out on the couch as the cooks did their thing. The heat was knocking everyone about a bit. In another day of firsts, Dubdoubt treated us to a cake - we’ve never had one on the show before. Meetch was a master cake-baker, closely assisted by John, and their wares knocked everyone out even further. Or was that the cocktails, compliments of the horn section? Nic put some tasty pizzas together, and Hayden prepared some colourful capsicums. A top feed. We asked the band to try keeping brand labels out of shot in the kitchen, and they really took it to heart, which was good to see. Dubdoubt stickers went on everything – including one on Hayden’s apron (nice touch). They say the food came from “the dub shop”. Nic also put Rock n Roll Cooking Show shopping bags all over the kitchen. Nothing like a bit of self-promotion. We’re all for it.Other than a wine glass breakage, an a bit of a complaint, it was a smooth, smooth shoot. Much like the Dubdoubt themselves. And sorry, Mark-the-neighbour, but it was for the greater good.

Shooting: Glasshouse

You might not guess it by their moody music and angst-ridden vocals, but the members of Glasshouse are happy, well adjusted people. Maybe we think that because when we met them they were pickled in finest vintage Barossa Valley plonk ;-) As with every show we’ve shot so far, it was a hot day and the band were keen to get comfortable with some air conditioning. Dan was concerned we’d trip his fuse box when the lights went up, and the show would subsequently be lost, so there was no air-conditioning to quash the fever. It’s a great house. Dan tells us it was renovated by a one-legged mountaineer. Stew added that he dug the holes using his peg leg, although the story couldn’t be 100% verified. There seemed to be some misunderstanding about the food budget, and the band stuck to $60 (!!!?). They explained that that’s why we were “stuck with egglant”. As soon as they found out this arbitrary figure was off the mark, they sorted out a run to the bottle-o. So it then became eggplant with wine… Having said that, Raven’s a vegetarian, so high budget or no budget, there was bound to be eggplant in there somewhere. Yet again, it was a fantastic feast. Roxy the cat lazed in the heat on the window sill, keeping an eye on the show. The audio position was the biggest squeeze we’ve had so far, our table barely fitting in Dan’s study; but it certainly worked well, and Dan was very hospitable, squeezing through and helping to plug in preamps. The fashions! Matt was eager to keep his hair out of the food, and ended up wearing a fine yellow and gold bandana. He threatened to cook nude, but it never materialized. Raven wore checkered laces on his shoes to give him speed, and Stew pointed out that you could tell the “sensible” people in the band by their shoes. Stew has an interesting role in the band, as both mother AND father. We don’t know how he does it, but he does.Amongst talk of Star Trek and Transformers, we asked the band to sign some aprons for us. Raven did some magic artwork of the band, including Dan upon his high horse; after which Raven proceeded to misspell glasshouse as “Glasshorse”.All in all it was an intense day. A good day. Upon leaving, Dan insisted that the crew be recorded on his computer, so here we bade farewell to “Glasshorse”. Matt told us it had been a new experience, and he couldn’t believe he had just cleaned up Dan’s kitchen.Aware that escaping the glasshouse should be our number one priority, we were concerned that we’d be stuck at Dan’s place until a tow truck came – he’s got a difficult driveway and an even steeper street. Polly, the faithful cooking show van, loaded to the hilt, made it out of the driveway and up the 45 degree climb. Despite the smoke, she also made it back to base. Ta Polly. So yes, we did escape the glasshouse, but we’re really glad we went there.

Shooting: Repeat Offender

Repeat Offender are definitely the worst cooks we’ve seen to date. That said, they’re also the funniest and most inventive. Confident in the kitchen, with a profound display of brotherly love, Repeat Offender gave each other more slaps, punches and general abuse than we ever could have imagined. We think we woke up Joel with a bit of a shock when we arrived on his doorstep. He’d been up all night watching movies and seemed pretty tired. As we lugged our gear into his garage, he took a shower, then glued himself to his playstation and didn’t really emerge until Steven and Ryan arrived. Steven was busy on the phone shelling out directions to Joel’s place, which proved to be a bit difficult to find for the other band members and their guests. When all the guys finished ridiculing Joel’s place and his girlfriend’s dog, they set up to play. The band lured Joel away from the playstation, and they powered though six songs. Again, the room was hot and steamy but we kept the doors closed in an effort to reduce the noise for the neighbours. Clearly, the stress of the world was on Joel’s shoulders. Dane was a little bit lost without his full drum kit at times, and both Joel and Matt used tiny little practice amps. Even so, the room was loud and monitoring the audio was practically impossible from where we were! The introduction was shot out the front of the house. A hollow stump (letterbox) was jammed to the hilt with old newspapers, and a cigarette butt somehow found its way amongst the papers, along with the remark, “does anyone smell burning?” A lot of “nut-cracking” went on at this time and Steven ended up on the floor for a while. We made our way back inside, and we notice Joel picked up all the papers when we left. There was talk of a Mexican theme for the cooking side of things. We see it for the guacamole, but we’re not too sure how the BBQ meat (notable omission of any accompaniment other than tomato sauce!??!), cream buns with sprinkles, and red cordial tie into a traditional Mexican meal. Shooting the episode was so quick (it all happened in 2.5hrs) that we’re sad to say, we didn’t get to taste the all fares. The guacamole had a slight ham taste to it, but no-one was able to establish where the ham flavour came from. The crew speculate that the guacamole may have been prepared in the dog-bowl. Anything’s possible. They only drank a six-pack between them, but a lot of warm red cordial went down, so perhaps that was part of the reason for Repeat Offender’s hyperactive state. More food ended up on the floor, eaten by the dog, and down Matt’s pants than in the band members’ stomachs. We couldn’t believe it when a cream-covered Matt ended up in the luminescent green pool, along with a steak that had previously been flung in (we didn’t manage to get the steak on camera). Matt, we just hope you don’t “catch grapes on your arse.” But judging by the conversations we heard, we know that if you do, Steven will be able to help you with your diagnosis and treatment. We know it was an intrusion Joel, so a big thanks for your hospitality!

Shooting: The Gin Club

The first hot day of not-yet-summer - "a bazillion degrees", and the weekend of the Ashes in Brisbane. Beer, wine and aperitifs... and time for The Gin Club. Family duty called away our hostess, Bridget, so we found ourselves in the usual position of entering an empty house with a key that had been stashed under a sudoku book on the front verandah. We tore inside, rifled though all her stuff and eventually dug out a much-needed garage key from her underwear drawer ;-)As we were setting up in the garage, Scott, Conor, Brad, Ben and Bridget arrived, checked the cricket score, cracked open some beers and got into the show! They moved furniture off the back verandah, but were careful to maintain some clutter, so a few small details were carefully place: a bunch of dead flowers, and old BBQ, some books and a couple of stuffed toys. The frog is well-travelled. It's been the world over. Don't know about the money on the drum kit.Sausage, our cameraman and roadie to the stars, pulled out a killer keyboard that Brisbane Backline supplied us with, and the band gathered around, ogled and drooled, and decided to weave in a song with keys. They included a song written by each one of the song-writing members who came for the show - resulting in five great songs and a lot of swapping of instruments. We asked the band to sign some aprons for us, and it was at this time that Ben picked up on the other bands that have been on the show to date... "I bet Preference wouldn't have cooked anything like this." And upon viewing the penis that The Kidney Thieves drew on an apron, he wasn't to be outdone; so he drew a hairy pair and a set of "tummy boobs" on The Gin Club's apron. There was a lot of pride in the kitchen. Some top tips and great food came out. So did a healthy disrespect for cooking shows and celebrity chefs. Huey and Jamie copped it. And we couldn't help but notice that bands like to focus on the poo heritage of mushrooms. The Gin Club were the third to mention it. There's a theme running though this series! For a collective that's breaching twelve members when at full, things much get pretty rowdy when the Ginners are together. The Gin Club was great to have on the show, BUT there was one notable omission... was NO GIN! Is a gin club without gin like a pub with no beer? Not judging by our experience...

Shooting: 26

26 decided to play an acoustic set for their appearance, and it was too nice a day to stay inside, so the band set up for a relaxed preformance on Drew’s back deck. They left all their amplifiers at home and chose to play with in-ear monitors. The band were the only ones with foldback, so the camera crew found it to be a strange experience – unable to hear any bass or keyboards; just low level vocals, guitar and drums during the performance. Well, it all sounded good over in Drew’s bedroom where the audio was being recorded. We asked the guys to sign some aprons for us, and they really went to town. 26 produced the most decorated aprons we’ve seen – each song described with its own illustration. Not hard to tell that Drew’s a graphic designer when he’s not being a musician. Incidentally, his bedroom gave that away, too.Ross and Nick were picking up the groceries at the Valley Markets, so we got off to a bit of a late start. Then, two songs in… BOOM. Technical difficulties - our late start was made even later when one of our key audio power supplies blew up. Fortunately, Ross had a suitable replacement to lend us, to we took a break while he dashed home to grab it. It took about an hour, and we all sat back and had a chat about everything from photocopier abuse to the ARIAS and MTV music awards. Angela, our Production Supervisor is smitten with Kanye West’s recent best video “losing speech.”Once we were on track again, the western sun started to creep over and was beginning to beat down on the band – Iain was copping some intense heat on his feet. Nick lost a string re-tuning for Friendly Fire, so that song was done on 5 string geeetar. The performance wrapped and we got off the deck before we all fried. It was a hot day. They told us they all love Asian food, and there was a very obvious Asian influence in Nick and Ross’ choice of dishes. Drew (having Italian roots) would like to have prepared something Italian – especially for his Nonna. The band commented that they should have brought Nonna onto the show. Perhaps if we ever get to do a “Rock n Roll Cooking – Where Are They Now?” ☺ There was some talk about a dessert being a tin of two fruits and ice cream, but it never happened. Where did it go, Ross? ☺ Still, the affogato was a winner. We ran a good 2hrs overtime, and Iain had to take off for a gig down the coast before the meal was ready. Bit of a shame, but dem’s da brakes. The affogato had some kick, so it’d definitely have kept him awake for the drive. Nick, Ross and Drew finished up the meal and we all sat ‘round and dug in. For a band who say they eat out a lot, 26 cooked a fine feast. It’s a lot to do in a day! Nick reckons so. We agree, too. We’re always shagged by then end. But you can’t complain when it’s been a good day.

Shooting: Bertha Control

It’s a good sign when you turn up to a house and there’s lots of laughter going down. What’s more, when there’s five white girls playing reggae… you just know it’s gonna be a good day! Bertha Control are a rare breed and a completely entertaining funk/ska/reggae outfit. Drawing on the teachings of Pappa Cattone, the gifts of the garden, and the inspiration of “Bertha”, Bertha Control prepared an organic meal as they’d normally cook for each other. We shot the show from MaTHRILLda’s share house. It’s the kind of place where everyone’s politically and socially aware, and enormously artistic (including all of Bertha Control). The house is packed with vibrant artworks and world maps. It was clear to us that the place was a home away from home for the rest of the band who live down the coast. While loading our gear into the house, a group of six or so young neighbourhood boys were tempting fate, pushing their mate down the very very steep hill on the road in a cardboard box on a skateboard. If that makes sense. JC Bassey and MaTHRILLda tried to talk them out of it, but the boys were sure that “the cardboard will protect him.” All I saw was the cardboard get caught in the wheels and the kid go over sideways, fortunately without injury. All I could hear was a lot of laughter from Bertha Control. We were mostly set-up, but sorely missing a drum kit and some amps when Patty and CC pulled up in their van with the gear. Patty did a quick set-up, jumping though the verandah windows like a seasoned pro. We did a sound check, then launched straight into the cooking. On the other shows we’ve done, the bands like to shoot the music first, but Bertha Control decided they’d like to get the cooking “out of the way” so they could relax and play music afterwards. It’s all a matter of perspective, isn’t it.The sun was beating down at the front of the house, so we shot our introduction from the side of the house, since it’s on a corner block. As soon as we were done, MaTHRILLda was keen to get into the garden for a harvest - what’s cooking without the freshest organic ingredients? Walking through the garden was lovely, and I don’t think the shots we got do it justice. It might not look like it, but there’s heaps of food growing in there… and in the kitchen cupboard. MaTHRILLda had been growing mushrooms for a month especially for the show! Infact, I think the show was almost timed for those mushies. The whole band was at home in the kitchen, and worked closely together, although Fretless was the least determined cook. What she lost in cooking initiative, she made up for as bar person and general entertainer. It was unexpected, but fabulous to hear the band break into song while they were cooking, and soothing to hear CC palying away on a nylon-stringed guitar. The girls gave thanks to “Bertha” for the meal. Infact, they said thanks to “Bertha” many times during the day. But who or what is Bertha? Apparently, Bertha does all sorts of good stuff for them, like paying their petrol bills. We’d like to thank Bertha for feeding the crew such an excellent meal! After such a big lunch, we wondered whether we’d be able to get everyone up to play. We all sat around for a chat; JC Bassey fell asleep and the band’s guests cleaned up the kitchen (you know you’ve got good friends when…). When the band got to playing, they attracted an audience of one very inquisitive bloke who sat outside the windows in a stalker-like manner. He even came right up to the windows and looked in for a good while as everyone was packing up. JC Bassey was keen to sell him a CD. Don’t know if that happened or not…We lost power to the keyboard amp a couple of times during “Daze of the Weak”, and MaTHRILLda’s mic pack fell off, unable to withstand the movement of dancing, so we ran through that song again. Watch MaTHRILLda’s dancing if you get to see it – called “hold your beltpack on your back.”We ate well, drank well, danced well and laughed well.

Shooting: PTYLTD

We visited the studio of Pty Ltd, where the lads spend many a day slaving over hot equipment in a building they share with a few other local musos. Thursday BBQs are a common occurrence there, so we took the opportunity to make this Thursday BBQ a little bit different. Tim took the reigns in transforming the front area of the building from an industrial shed into a cool lounge and BBQ area, and that’s where we shot the show. There was no containment of the sound on this one, and we think the residents and workers in this inner-city area must have enjoyed their short concert. It had us dancing on the rooftops. Incidentally, a lot of the show was shot from on top of the bent iron roof, and we’re please to report that nobody fell off or through. The roof gets walked on quite regularly, but the band aren’t sure whether it’s advisable…The atmosphere at the studio was relaxed and cool under the large red lanterns in the downstairs courtyard. As with the previous episodes, everybody quickly took their place and stuck to it. Danny worked predominantly as the dish-pig (apparently there are no human rights in his relationship with Tim). Peter G made the cocktails and hung out on the couch, and Grant hung out with him: his sunglasses barely coming off for a very good reason. We nearly had an electrical disaster when Peter G juiced a watermelon, narrowly missing a powerboard. We’ve learnt a thing or two about powerboard placement from that incident.Julian turned out to be quite an amazing cook, so between him and Tim, dinner was on. They were chopping before we’d even put the tape into the cameras. We were astonished when we saw the size and quality of the snapper Tim had sourced from Raptis Seafood, and can testify to the fantastic taste. It was cooked to perfection. The smell of the Thai curry was unbelievably good – in fact, all the food they cooked was quite amazing and we had the chance to really hoe in on this one. Cheers Pty’s.It was a long shoot, and you can see from the footage that we went through the evening. The preparation for the cooking took a good while, and a few people were moaning about hunger (that always seems to happen on this show). As Julian says, the longer the preparation, the better the food. Luckily, there were enough vodka cocktails and plenty of good cheer to go around in the mean time.Great day. Three down, ten to go!

Shooting: The Kidney Thieves

The Kidney Thieves: five young men and a world of cheese. Shoot number 2, and TKT warmed up the outer suburbs of Brisbane from their crowded home – it’s shared by three of the band members, their frequent guests, Jazz the dog, and an alleged array of snakes, spiders and ticks. We knew we were in the right place when we arrived– it was hard to miss the band’s bright yellow car with “The Kidney Thieves” in bold letters down the sides. It’s an old ambulance called the “Jambulance”. Make sure you honk if you see the Jambulance!!It had been a big night for the entire band. Reportedly, they’d been party hopping, except for Simon who was somewhere north of Harvey Bay and was driving back for the shoot. Housemates Jack Muzak, Cpt Chrispy Booyah and Crafty J had spent the morning setting up the jam room and were ready to play, so we woke The Dancing Mule and propped him up behind the drum kit. Simon arrived some time later and we began. “Sex Panther” … number 1.TKT played through four songs before nearly flaking out in the heat of the jam room, so we broke to the back deck for a beer in a wheelchair. Crafty J found the chair in an old parking lot some time ago and brought it home. Now it’s just part of the furniture, and we’ve never seen such unmatched enthusiasm for a wheelchair. Forget “Midnight Manoeuvers": TKT have real wheelchair manoeuvers! We’d love to see TKT vs the Australian Wheelchair Basketball Team in a film clip. Nobody wanted to cook! Prior to the shoot, a few of TKT’s friends were visiting, and left us with the advice, “Jack can cook. He can really cook.” So the band voted Jack Muzak as head chef, and the rest of band followed. We’ve never seen anyone eat so much in the preparation phase of cooking, so the band didn’t eat much once the food was cooked. We tried it all, and it was all good. The cheese salad definitely gets stuck in your throat, but as Crafty J says, “this is fusion cooking.” We especially loved the “stoney street slice” (although it didn’t contain cheese). And the fellas even gave us a doggy bag to take home, all wrapped up in foil! YUM!

Our first shoot – Preference. They say they’re the “un-metallest-metal band” because they have only two tattoos between them: they just like metal, like to laugh, and like to entertain. We think they’re very metal! Between the style of music, the level of the sound and the thick air in the jam room, our first hour of shooting was a complete attack on the senses. A true metal experience. There was a bit of concern over the neighbours for this one, so Chris, (being a GOOD neighbour, and not wanting to make life difficult for his parents), made a pre-emptive letterbox drop warning or the forthcoming sound barrage. In an effort contain the sound, the doors to the jam room were closed. We handed out earplugs, and went for it…. and the band suddenly stopped for a long break in the middle of the first song. For a toast. Still don’t know what that was all about!?!? So much gear, so many people, such a small space. Tim commented that the only person who stepped on his pedals the wrong way was him. Testament to the delicate footwork of The Rock n Roll Cooking Show camera operators. A bit of light and shade was added into the mix with a flamenco guitar break by the band’s guest, “Guy Smiley”, who played his bit upstairs from the rest of band (no foldback required). Meanwhile downstairs, a strong smell of sweaty Preference permeated the air, and by the end of the set it was so hot and thick that everyone was pleased to escape onto the back verandah for a beer.We weren’t too sure what a metal band would cook… it had been suggested to us that a metal band would most likely prepare an all-meat frenzy, perhaps including chicken heads and bats etc. But not here. Although NicKo tells us that he likes to eat animals that appear on the Australian Coat of Arms, the band opted for a different menu – including Vietnamese rice-paper rolls, and “a big salad in a big salad bowl”. Cliches and stereotypes: we’re here to make ‘em and break ‘em.Preference like to eat. They love to get the BBQ smokin’ (thanks Nathan). They taught us that spooning leads to forking. We think they like to cook (except for Tim, but he made a sterling effort, none-the-less). Carlos can sure make a cocktail. The day loosened up progressively as his potent cocktails rolled out of the kitchen. At the end of filming, the band started climbing a palm tree in the backyard; resulting in a high incidence of cuts, scratches and grazing. It’s a shame we weren’t rolling for that gem. That’s where we left them, and we think the day had just begun.

Scheduling the first shoots

We've scheduled in a few shoots to kick us off. So far, Sundays are proving popular, and we're starting HEAVY. Our first shoot will be next weekend. What are we in for? Hopefully no friendly police intervention will be required between us and the neighbours J. Production-wise, we're set to go; just waiting on an 8 channel mic pre to arrive. Waiting waiting. There's a team of six on the shoot, and an endless stream of volunteers putting their hands up to come along and assist. Sadly, the stumps holding up and old Queenslander will only support a given load, and we think the load is our gear + 6. Six for starters, anyway. Don't want to scare any of our bands. They're a shy bunch.

Pre-season Teaser

We're just putting the finishing touches on the opener, and we've been invited along to showcase the program as an up-and-comer, at a sponsors' event for Briz31 television. Pity we've got no new material to showcase, but we'll cut together a 3 min piece using some of our crusty pilot material, and that should well and truly get the idea across. We loved our pilot bands. We'll let you know what the sponsors’ reaction is. Might be worth posting online as a "coming soon" ... Food for thought.

Location! Location! Location!

It seems a common cause of concern with this production is the LOCATION. We've been catching up with some of the bands, and they're a little bit anxious about the look of their homes - their "dodgy" kitchens and living areas etc. And the neighbours, of course. Well ... it's meant to be a true reflection of musical life. Some homes will be magazine lifestyle, most won't. Some of the bands are looking for alternative places to shoot. Fair enough. It’s up to them. Does raise the question, though: will the viewing public be concerned for the bands' wellbeing, or offended by the appearance of their homes to the point that they're turned off them for good? Maybe living at home with the parents doesn't attract the opposite sex. Maybe the viewing public will buy lots of albums as charity in the hope of getting their favourite bands into swanky accommodation (or out of their parents' houses). Maybe, just maybe, we'll all get a better understanding of REAL musical life.

On With The Show

Start warming up the valves ... the show is on! Now that the pilots have proven a bit of a hit, we're contacting a number of great Brisbane acts to see who's up for the challenge of appearing on the first series of The Rock n Roll Cooking Show. And so far they've all given a resounding "YES!!" (bar one nervous bunch, who said "... ummm, no", then…. "YES"!). We intend to keep on recruiting ... lining up more acts over the coming months, and shooting one episode per week/fortnight until we've got a series of 13 hugely entertaining shows. Busy times ahead. Good thing the Orange Octopus has so many "legs". Good thing Brisbane is full of fantastic acts!
