About the show

In Brief...

Ever wondered what it might happen if you were invited to dinner at your favourite band's house?

It's The Rock n Roll Cooking Show! Things are a little bit Swedish Chef and a little bit Spinal Tap!

Each new episode features a different group of original music-makers who entertain the viewing audience from home; playing a set and cooking a meal to share.

Sure they can play, but can musicians actually cook? What do they cook? We're at the mercy of the musos, as they choose the menu and take charge of the kitchen - shedding a whole new light on the culinary arts! So don't expect to learn how to cook! On the other hand, don't be surprised if you do ...

The show features all original music, performed live for the show. We've recorded in bedrooms, lounge rooms, garages, jam rooms, verandahs, kitchens... haven't done a toilet yet!

Get a raw and comical insight into the lives of musicians and find out what they're really about. It doesn't get more honest and intimate than this!

At length...

Each episode features a different band.

A broad range of original music and musical styles are featured on the show - it's not just rock and roll (as the name may suggest!). We like diversity in music because it brings different perspectives, dynamics, life experiences, and approaches to the show. So naturally, each show is a window into a whole new world!

All performances featured in each episode are on behalf of the musicians (and their guests). This is one of the things that gives the show its edge and its earthy appeal. That means no third-party opinions and analyses are rammed into the show. Let the viewer decide! See ya later B-grade judging panel. And that means no host, either.

And no host!???!

Who needs a host to mediate the cooking? Cut the "middle-man"! Keep it real. We reckon having no host gives the musos a direct line to the viewers and allows them to interact more naturally. Not to mention all the fun of the band having additional "hosting" responsibilities when they're already fish out of water in the kitchen!

Let it roll... tell it like it is. We appreciate musicians for who they are, and their own thoughts, ideas and anecdotes are what makes the show the show. After all, who wants to hear and see the same thing over and over? Variety's the spice of life!

It might sound like an anarchic approach, but it yields an intimate feel, a lot of humour, and a better picture of your favourite musos when they're not under someone else's thumb. It's not always riotous, but it is always real. Raw. Honest. Real. Much better than boring, polished, and contrived.

It's un-scripted reality-come-documentary.

Here's how it works. We visit a band for a day. We ask them to cook and play for us, but how they do it and what they say is up to them. Sometimes they bring their friends along for dinner. We just watch, film and allow the cameras to quietly interact, taking the band's lead.

The musicians choose the food.

The musicians choose and cook their own food in their own kitchens - that way they're completely in control of the situation (or out of control, as is often the case). And this means food is sometimes prepared in strange and unconventional ways. Other times there's real cooking talent, and the food comes out kinda pro! We don't mind what they cook and how it happens... it's all an extension of the band and the music.

The music is performed live ...

The musicians play a live set of their original music. Some bands choose to rock out, others strip the music back to its acoustic foundations. Everything you hear is recorded on the spot. No backing tracks, overdubs and session players. Just old fashioned talent, and people hanging out, enjoying music together.

Five songs is the norm, and we'll record almost anywhere (as long as it's out of the wind and rain). So bedrooms, lounge rooms, garages, jam rooms, verandahs, kitchens... it's all on.

... and it's all from the band members' houses.

The show is shot on location in the environment that the music comes from, and this is generally the home of the musicians (haven't done a tour bus yet). So there are heaps of additional visual clues that give a further insight into musical lives, and a further understanding of the musicians and their music.

The results:

"Just saw your show for the first time and loved it. Great to see lots of veggie recipes and as the vegetarian mother of a 20yr old sax playing carnivore it was great for him to see. He only realised at the end of the show that food can be interesting and "blokey" without meat. Look forward to seeing more."

"I think the show is an amazing addition to brizvegas's limited television programming, and absolutely loved the small glimpses of the handsome cameraman/producer whoever he is, but I found the lack of endorsement towards the great pre-packed basil tubes and more than reasonable stock sauces that the great Huey recommends during his daily afternoon blockbuster show ultimately disheartening.É Keep up the great work."
