Series One: Bertha Control

Putting the fun back in funk, and the gay back in reggae, Bertha Control are healing the world through music… and cooking!

With nothing in the closet except some home-grown mushrooms, the multi-instrumentalists played a vibrant set on the verandah of saxophonist, MaTHRILLda’s, house.

Representing the sisterhood, this sometimes politically motivated all-girl five-piece played through five of their reggae-ska-rebel tunes, with harmonies in full bloom.

The band presented a colourful vegetarian feast, using ingredients fresh-picked from the garden and other veges from the local organic food co-op. Veg with personality all the way!

Bertha Control kicked off the cooking with a harvest, before cramming five Berthas, one dog and several friends into the kitchen at once.

CC, representing the greens, chose the lettuce for her salad leaf by leaf, and carefully checked it for cabbage patch kids. Jules, veg-aquarian, had the mushrooms under control as she sang about a cook named “Gina,” and tended to the compost.

Patty Bom, tres gourmet, focused on a fantastic red sauce, and demonstrated how drumming skills are useful when tending to multiple dishes in the kitchen.

Flawless, caretaker of beverages, struggled to blend pine-nuts with a stick blender before building her muscles the witchy way with a mortar and pestle, and finally coming into the 21st century with a food processor.

MaTHILLda showed us through her garden, prepared two delicious dips, and gave us an Australian “Herstory” lesson, acknowledging Indigenous Australians.

… and Prue and True popped in for a quick how d’you do… and helped with the menuuu….

Eat up and our belly’s full! Thanks for the food and music, and thanks for the five Berthas, totally in control. Gaymen.…and gay woman.
