The “rainy-day sessions with 26”, direct from Drew’s kitchen, were a held in the middle of a drought… no rain, lots of sun, and a light, refreshing Asian-influenced meal. It’s hardly rainy-day stuff. Then again, 26 weren’t their usual selves that day.

Normally a big loud rock band, 26 left their amplifiers and samplers at home to play a relaxed acoustic set on the back deck, featuring five tunes, and including a county-styled version of “Rescue Me.”

The surf and turf affair was run by the “taller boys,” Nick and Ross, who chose the menu for the day, drawing on the band’s love of Asian foods and coffee.

Nick also drew upon the country’s rich aluminium reserves to create a foil parcel for his Thai-style fish bake, as Iain cleaned up the “sackable offence” left behind from the Thai Beef Salad.

Drew, having arrived at the conclusion that he is better suited to eating other people’s food than cooking food for them, used his skills to assist with other important tasks around the kitchen; including presentation of food, cleaning plates, operating the oven, and setting the table.

Ross specialized in the presentation of herbs, whipping of teatowels, and the preparation of sauce; involving the chopping of chillis, whose wrath he later felt.

After a game of “name this song,” Iain packed up to head off for another gig, and the rest of the band waited for the fish bake to cook. They served it up with their tong tong tong tong tongs before moving onto a delicious affogato dessert.

Light, refreshing. Perfect for a summer’s day.
